SIUE pitcher Brock Fulkerson
EDWARDSVILLE – UT Martin right-hander Dalton Westfall outdueled SIUE starter Brock Fulkerson Saturday and the Skyhawks escaped with a 3-1 win in the second game of a three-game series at Simmons Baseball Complex.
SIUE fell to 17-21 overall and 6-14 in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Cougars have lost eight straight. UT Martin improved to 16-20 overall and 6-11 in the OVC. The final game of the three-game series is set for 1 p.m. Sunday.
Westfall worked into the ninth inning, allowed just a single runs on four hits while fanning 11 Cougar hitters. He improved to 4-4 with the win.
“That is about as good of an outing as we have faced all year,” SIUE coach Sean Lyons said. “The ball was moving all over. He did a great job and we just got nothing going all day long.”
Fulkerson pitched eight innings allowing three runs on nine hits. He struck out five. He fell to 2-5 with the loss.
“Brock did exactly what we needed,” Lyons said. “After last night we needed someone to come out and hold them at bay.”
Tyler Albright hit a one-out home run in the first to get UTM on the board. The Skyhakws then scored twice on three hits in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead.
SIUE finally broke through in the eighth inning. Eric Giltz led off the inning with an infield hit. Marty Brunk then walked and Mario Tursi laid down a sacrifice bunt. UTM catcher Keylen Steen fielded the ball and threw to third, but it got past third baseman Jo Jo Allen allowing Giltz to score.
The Cougars put two on in the ninth, but left both runners on base.
“The guys kept grinding away and fighting and scratching,” Lyons said. “We just didn’t come up with the big hit. That’s kind of the way it’s been going.”
